The Hon. Minister for the Interior, Mr. Ambrose Dery today joined H.E. the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Diplomatic Corps, Security Services, Chiefs and some officials for the 76th Reembrace Day Service at the Christiansburg Commonwealth Cemetery at Osu in Accra.
Remembrance Day falls on 11th November of each year to remember those who sacrifice their lives in World War 1 and 2 for the peace Ghana is enjoying today as a country. The officiating clergy, Capt. Nketia-Yamoah, prayed for peace for the world and the souls of the departed.
In 1918, the Armistice which ended World War 1 became effective at 11 am on 11th November 1918, when the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France and Belgium and signified the end of four years of hostilities. The day was called Armistice Day.
Ghana, then the Gold Coast and being part of the British Empire, also sent her officers overseas to fight in the war and some lost their lives. It is for this reason that Ghana celebrates the men and women who died or suffered in wars and conflicts over the past 100 years. It is celebrated at the Eleventh hour of the day, on the Eleventh day of the month and in the Eleventh month of the year.
After World War II, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day to remember those who were killed in both World Wars and instituted as a National Day of Remembrance.
H.E. President Akufo-Addo laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and People of Ghana, H.E. the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson also laid a wreath on behalf of the Commonwealth and allied countries among others.
