The Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, Mrs. Adelaide Anno-Kumi has reiterated the Government of Ghana’s commitment to maintain and protect its borders and border-crossing for the peace, security and safety of the good people of Ghana and border residents.
According to her, protection of the country’s borders for peace and security is very paramount and that as a country the Government will continue to promote safe and lawful entry and exit of
travelers to promote business and development.
Mrs Anno-Kumi was speaking at a Stakeholders Consultation Workshop to Develop Roadmap for Mainstreaming Human Security and Gender Equality in Accra which was organized by Star
Ghana Foundation in collaboration with International Organisation for Migration and the United
Nations Trust Fund for Human Security.
The Chief Director noted that the development of the National Border Security Strategy to address matters in the area of increased terrorism, cyber related crimes and technology induced crimes among others should be sustained whilst addressing issues of gender equality and the mainstreaming of human security matters.
Mrs Adelaide Anno-Kumi however noted that ethnic conflicts, chieftaincy disputes, mob violence and armed robbery among others could be threats to Ghana’s developmental agenda which also ought to be considered as such.
She disclosed that Ghana has acceded to and ratified a number of standards and codes, including the United Nations Convention on the promotion of Human Rights, the Convention against
torture and other cruel and inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment as well as, the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, which are positive signs.
The Chief Director stated that the West African Sub-Region faces challenges of effectively managing its borders due to the porous nature of the borders but the Government of Ghana has
initiated steps that aligns with the globally accepted collaborative approach in border management. She added that the initiated steps are considered the effective ways to counter
threats and promote efficiencies in trade and cross-border travels.
She commended the organizers of the workshop for their initiative to support Government in enhancing the National Border Security Strategy as part of Ghana’s Broad Security Strategy
launched in 2020 aimed at creating an enabling condition for prosperous, peaceful and secure nation.
