The Hon. Deputy Minister for the Interior, Hon. Naana Eyiah has stated that the government is committed to resourcing the Security Service agencies to enable them to fight crime and its related activities in the wake of violent extremism which is evident in the rollout of a number of interventions including the expansion of the manpower base of the security agencies.
Speaking at the Passing-Out Parade of Recruit Course 122 at the Prison Officers Training School in Accra, the Deputy Minister for the Interior applauded the Ghana Prisons Service for their commitment to the discharge of its mandate of ensuring the safe custody and welfare of prisoners.
She acknowledged that the task of ensuring safe custody and welfare of prisoners, and of their reformation and rehabilitation presents daunting challenges. Yet, it is evident that the Prisons Service remains committed to carrying out this mandate well.
The Hon. Deputy Minister also commended the Ghana Prisons Service for collaborating with the National Entrepreneurship Programme (NEIP) to provide skills, starter packs, and kits in various light manufacturing areas and entrepreneurship to Prison Officers and inmates.
Hon. Naana Eyiah congratulated the recruits and advised them to exhibit the skills and knowledge acquired through their training. She added that they should remain disciplined and professional in all their conduct, whiles adopting the principles of vigilance, humanity, and fortitude
She also admonished them to treat the prisoners with care, respect, and decency without compromising their professional ethics.
The graduating class of Recruit Course 122 received instructions in Prison Duties, Penal Law, Reception Duties, Inter-personal Skills, First Aid, and the Computation of Prisoners’ Sentences, amongst others. .
These disciplines were structured to ensure that they become equipped with the initial knowledge and skills required for the duty ahead of them as Prison Officers.
The total number on the Recruit course 122 was four hundred and forty-eight (448), which comprises two hundred and sixty-one (261) young men, representing 58.3% of the total number on the course and one hundred and eighty-seven (187) young women, which represents 41.7% of the total number
